The Lovemore Project Story

The story of Lovemore has grown organically. It has never been and will never be a classic, corporate ‘business plan’ model. It was never a strategic idea to fit a demand niche. Instead, it has come into fruition almost of its own, with serendipitous alignment around every corner. And it’s this organic alignment that makes me believe such a project is not only possible, but meant to be. In 2017 my family was invited on a tour through regional Zimbabwe for a cultural exchange. I come from a family of musicians, and the previous year we had fundraised for World Vision Zimbabwe, who would become our tour guides in an effort to show us where and how their donations are spent. This is where I was introduced to the…

The Passive Continent. How Do We Want to Represent the Other?

For those who don't know me, I've been passionate about documentary photography for years, and even more so about the kind that uses images to tell the story of realities and places that we Europeans find so intriguing, places that for years were seen as exotic and outside the contemporary world. I don't want to write to you as an industry insider, that would be a dream, but let's be honest: the photojournalism we saw in the second half of the 20th century no longer exists, market logic has swallowed it whole, the field has been complicit in neo-colonial visions for years, and even now we're still asking ourselves what the right way to represent the Other might be. For years now, because of global and migration crises and wars, we've seen suffering peoples represented more and more, if that's even a fair generalization, though I don't feel it's the right term. To understand how we got here, it's worth taking a step back. Photography entered newspapers at the end of the nineteenth…

Let's become human again

Day after day, silently, our ability to choose has eroded without almost anyone noticing. We have reached a point where the information and stories we read are chosen by someone else. We have stopped choosing what to watch: it is offered to us, and we accept it, passively. For us, this is the moment to stop. We no longer want to think about the stories we tell based on their compatibility with social media algorithms. We no longer want time limits, extreme speed, or attention spans under two seconds. We are taking a step back, with pride. We want to return to an internet made of communities: that world of sharing and discovery from which the first forums, the first blogs, and the first online news pages were born. Welcome to The Lovemore Chronicle, the new home of our stories, our ideas, and our projects. Here you will not find videos packed with special effects designed to grab your attention. Here, you will have to come on your own accord. You will be the ones to choose whether to read or not, dedicating your quality time to us. It will be a free choice, and it will be yours.
